The Ennis Swimming & Life-Saving Club was formed in 1941 and the first swimming gala was held in the Turret on the River Fergus in August of that year.

Every member of the club was expected to undergo life-saving instruction and as a consequence the club became the strongest life-saving club in Munster, winning innumerable Munster titles and eventually both the President's and Central Council Cups, which were the Irish Red Cross Water Safety Sections Irish Championships.

There is still a strong emphasis on life-saving instruction within the club to the present day.

John and Nora Murphy have had a long-standing involvement with the club. John held the title of Honorary President of the Ennis Swimming Club. Their daughter Claire coaches the B squad and is a member of the National Competitions Committee.

Claire and her husband Brendan received the V.E.C. Community Award for their outstanding commitment to swimming. Claire's sister Norma has now graduated to the Ennis Masters Swimming Squad and achieved remarkable success at the European Championships in Munich last year.

Today there are 350 children swimming with the Ennis Swimming & Life-Saving Club, ranging in ages from 7-19.
