The following was received from The Federation of Irish Sports:

Dear All

The Federation is concerned, in light of the dramatic deterioration in government finances, that funding to sport may be reduced further in the forthcoming emergency budget on April 7th.

We are worried about the impact any such reduction would have particularly, if the funding to the Irish Sports Council were to be affected. It is possible that were the funds available to the Irish Sports Council affected that at least some of the outstanding portions of both the core and high performance grants payable to National Governing Bodies of Sport would be in jeopardy.

The contention of the Federation is that sport plays a huge part  in the life of the nation. It is evident from recent weeks that success on the international stage gives the country a huge lift but equally important is the health and social benefits derived from the millions of people who participate in sport and physical activity in their local communities every day of the year.

The Federation has written to all T.D.’s and Senators in relation to the need not to reduce any further the monies invested in sport and in particular, to safeguard the funding to the Irish Sports Council. I attach a copy of that letter to this email together with the accompanying fact sheet referred to therein and a copy of a press release to be issued tomorrow morning in respect of the issue. Roddy Guiney of WHPR is advising and assisting the Federation in relation to the matter and we are grateful to him for his support and advice in relation to the matter.

We feel that it is important that the sporting bodies as a whole are seen to be united in making the case for continued government investment and support for sport. We would therefore ask each of you to:
  1. Contact your specialist media regarding to the importance of government funds to your sport;
  2. Contact T.D.’s and/or Senators in relation to the importance of maintaining government investment in sport.
  3. Place a copy of the release up on your website tomorrow & distribute a copy to your members (also tomorrow) asking them to speak to local T.D.’s if possible.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any queries you may have. I also have contact details for T.D.’s and Senators if required. In the meantime, I wish to thank you for your continued support.

Best wishes

Sarah
