ENNIS SWIMMERS WIN 21 MEDALS IN FINAL GALA OF SEASON.
The final Munster region grade ‘C’ gala took place in Tralee recently and there was a near total turn out of swimmers from all clubs. Despite losing a number of team members who were promoted to the B grade throughout the year the The Ennis C’s had a strong team partaking. They had high expectations after earlier success and significant improvement as a result of their continued commitment to their training schedule.

They won a total of 18 medals(8 gold, 5 silver and 8 bronze) and once again many personal best performances for most of the swimmers. Three swimmers, Eleanor Carey, Darragh Gregan and Niall Broderick had an additional end of year bonus when they were successful in achieving the times required to promote them to the ‘B’ grade for next season. Overall results for the Ennis swimmers are as follows.

Boys 7-11. Colm Mc Namara: Gold in 50m freestyle in50.40s; 6th in 100m freestyle in 1.33.08. Oliver Welaratne: Bronze in 50m backstroke in 47.15s; 5th in the 50m freestyle in 44.00s.

Girls 7-11. Imogen Cotter won a bronze in the 50m freestyle in a time of 43.20 secs., which was a four second pb. Abbie Sullivan won the bronze also in the 50m breaststroke in a time of 55.44s, a pb of 0.84 secs. great improvement from her sixth place at her last gala.

Boys 12-13: Darragh Gregan won gold in the 100m frestyle in 1.25.00s, a full five seconds inside the ‘B’grade qualifying time. He won gold also in the 50m freestyle in 38.00s. He took the silver in the 50m breaststroke in 50.05s which was again inside the ‘B’ grade time. Michael Moriarity won the silver medal in the 50m freestyle in39.51s. Michael won bronze in the 100m freestyle in 1.27.49s which was well within the ‘B’ grade time. He just failed to make the overall ‘B’ grade when finishing 4th in the 50m backstroke in 46.68s. Niall Broderick won bronze in the 50m backstroke in 44.53s, nicely inside the ‘B’ grade time for which he now qualifies. Nigel Hehir won the bronze in the 50m freestyle in 40.34s, giving Ennis a clean sweep of the medals in the boys sprint event.

Girls 12-13. Eleanor Carey won the gold in the 50m freestyle in 40.09s., almost 10 seconds improvement in her pb. She also won a bronze in the 100m I.M. in 1.41.84s., and over two seconds inside the ‘B’ grade time. She was somewhat unlucky to finish fourth in the 50m breaststroke in 51.23s, where she also had a huge pb in excess of 16 seconds and this was also nearly two secs. inside the ‘B’ grade time. Great all-round swimming from her on the day.

Boys 14-15: Killian O Brien had a tremendously successful gala winning 3 gold medals, in the 100m I.M., in the 50m freestyle and in the 50m breaststroke events in 1.56.59s, 40.31s and 48.53 seconds respectively. He won a fourth medal, a silver in the 100m freestyle in 1.34.06.

Girls 14-15: Cliodhna Mc Cannon won gold in the 50m freestyle in 41.59s, improving her pb by over one second. She won silver medals in both the 100m freestyle in 1.32.25 and 50m backstroke in 53.21 secs. Finally she won her fourth medal, a bronze in the 100m I.M. in a time of 1.54.58 secs. Cliodhna’s time in the 100m freestyle was inside the ‘B’ grade qualifying time also.

The C team swimmers have had a very rewarding season and will now take a deserved break for the Summer. They would like to thank their coaches also for devoting so much of their own time throughout the year to continually improving their swimming strokes and preparing them so well for their competitive galas.
