The Ennis swimming team had terrific success in a Munster region grade B gala in Shannon at the weekend. In total they won 41 medals including 5 relay medals. There were 17 gold, 14 silver and 11 bronze medals.
This was their best overall tally to date at this year’s meets with just one gala remaining in the current season, in early June. From thirty two individual events in which they competed the Ennis team won half of the gold medals and one third of all the medals on offer.
All round improvement was very evident in most performances. This time Siobhan Mc Grath, Emma Casey and Donnchadh O Sullivan made the times for entry to the grade ‘A’ level of competition after achieving the qualifying standards in a minimum of two events. Very well done to those three athletes.
Ennis results at the gala were:
Girls 8-11: Molly Lynch won gold in the 100m freestyle in 1.30.66, putting in a very strong effort over the last 25 meters and setting a new pb. She won 2 silver medals in the 200m freestyle and 100m breaststroke and 1 bronze in the 100m I.M. just maintaining her pb in all cases and showing very good consistency in all her performances.
Boys 8-11: Diarmuid Barron won 2 gold medals, in the 100m backstroke in 1.36.00 and the 100 I.M. in a time of 1.34.82 improving his old pb by nearly 3 secs. He took silver in the 100m freestyle in 1.24.31 just outside his pb and won bronze in the 200m freestyle in 3.01.32 slashing 16.50 secs from his previous best time. Stephan Rooney won silver in the 200m freestyle in 2.59.54, a 7 sec. pb. He won another silver in the 100m backstroke in 1.37.78, an improvement of 2 sec. on his pb. Girls 12-13: Siobhan McGrath was without doubt the top swimmer of the meet. She had a near perfect gala winning 4 gold medals in her four individual events. She won the 200m freestyle in 2.49.60 smashing her previous pb by 11 seconds and going under the ‘A’ time by a full 8 seconds.. Her second gold was in the 100m backstroke where she was virtually unchallenged. Next was gold in the 100m I.M. which she won in a new pb of 1.32.44 and her final individual gold coming in the 100m freestyle in a very good time of 1.17.94. Siobhan also won a team gold in the 200m medley relay event and a silver in the 200m freestyle relay for 8 – 12 year olds. A staggering total of 5 golds and 1 silver. Emma Casey won gold in the 100m butterfly. She took silver in the 200m freestyle in 2.54.71, a 6 sec improvement in her pb. This was a really encouraging swim for her when she also swam over 3 seconds inside the ‘A’ qualifying time.. She won bronze in the 100m I.M. and bronze also in the 100m freestyle. Mary Allan defended her winning run in the 100m breaststroke, claiming the gold in a time of 1.37.37, just outside her pb. She had to withstand a strong challenge from her team mate Emma Bryan. The two couldn’t be separated over the first 75m but over the last 10m Mary gradually edged her way to a clear victory. Emma taking the silver in 1.39.84. Mary had a 5 sec. pb in her 200m freestyle and 10.50 sec. pb in her 100m I.M.. Emma had an 8 sec. pb in her 100m I.M. Both also recorded big pb’s in their 200m freestyle event.
Boys 12-13: Donnchadh O Sullivan was the top boys swimmer winning 3 gold medals and a bronze. His first gold came in the tough 200m freestyle event where he put in a brilliant performance knocking 13.60 secs from his pb and achieved the ‘A’ grade qualifying time exactly of 2.48.00. He won another gold in the 100m I.M. and again took 2 secs. from his pb. His third gold was in the 100m breaststroke where his natural ability erned him a comfortable victory. He won the bronze in the 100m freestyle where he was well outside his personal best time, fatigue finally taking its toll. Conor Rooney won bronze in the 100m backstroke in 1.36.38 improving his time by 5.50 secs. He was a gallant fourth in the 200m freestyle in 2.53.00 lowering his time by a massive 9 secs. Sorcha Devine finished just outside the medals in fourth in the 100m freestyle but was well outside her own pb of 1.20.06.
Boys 14-15: Adam Barry won gold in the 200m freestyle clipping a huge15 secs. off his existing pb. He won silver in the 100m breaststroke in 1.35.41. He snatched a hard earned bronze in the 100m freestyle in a time of 1.18.40, just holding off team mate Mark Eisenberg who finished fourth in 1.18.85. However both will be delighted to have achieved the ‘A’grade time in this event. Adam was 5th in the 100m I.M. Conor Mc Enery swam really well to win gold in a very competitive 100m breaststroke and set a new pb of 1.35.29.
