The Ennis swimming team had terrific success in a Munster region grade B gala in Mayfield, Cork at the weekend. They won a total of 21 medals including 4 relay medals. There were 6 gold, 8 silver and 7 bronze medals. This time Conor Mc Enery made the times for entry to the grade ‘A’ level of competition after achieving the qualifying standards in a minimum of two events. Conor already had his time in the breaststroke and completed the job in style by winning the 100m I.M. event. Ennis results at the gala were:
Girls 8-11: Molly Lynch finished fourth in the 100m breaststroke in 1.51.72 losing out for the bronze medal by only 0.19 sec. She had a pb of 0.50 sec. in the 100m freestyle and finished in seventh.
Boys 8-11: Donough Cronin won the silver medal in the 100m breaststroke in 1.50.41 and yet was over 4 secs. outside his pb. He took the bronze in the 100m freestyle. He was pipped for third in the 200m freestyle in a time of 3.03.56, 2 secs. outside his pb. He was sixth in the 100m I.M. in 1.40.30 improving his pb by over 1 sec. Stephan Rooney won bronze in the 200m freestyle yet was over 3 secs. outside his pb. He finished fifth in the 100m backstroke but was well outside his pb and would have been among the medals had he swam near his best. Martin Moore was fifth in the 200m freestyle in 3.05.09 getting over a 3 sec. pb.
Girls 12-13: Mary Allan won the gold medal in the 100m breaststroke with another powerful swim in a very good time of 1.36.42. She recorded the fastest time of the day for girls in this event and reduced her pb by 0.74 sec. She had to hold off a stiff challenge from Mulhare of Dolphin swim club and in the end had a full second to spare.
Girls 14-15: Catherine Ziemann won silver in the 200m freestyle in 3.03.01 improving her pb by nearly one second. She also won silver in the 100m I.M. in 1.33.45 knocking 6 secs. from her previous best with a very good performance. She won a bronze in the 100m backstroke posting a time of 1.34.87 and also achieving her first ‘A’ qualifying time in this event . Emma Bryan won the gold in the 100m breaststroke by just 0.24 secs. in a very good time of 1.36.67. She clipped a full 3 seconds from her previous best time. She also won a bronze medal in the 100m I.M. in 1.34.53 taking 5 seconds from her pb.
Boys 14-15: Conor Mc Enery won the gold in the 100m I.M. in a great time of 1.25.78. This was almost a 5 second pb and dipped him well inside the ‘A’ grade qualifying time. This certainly made up for his close defeat in the 100m breaststroke when he won the silver in 1.36.98, just beaten by 0.50 sec. Mark Eisenberg won the gold medal in the 100m freestyle in a time of 1.15.12 and reduced his pb by over 1 second. He won bronze in the 200m freestyle in 2.50.11 and lowered his pb by 4 seconds. Adam Barry won gold in the 100m breaststroke in a good time of 1.36.41. Adam just missed the medals when finishing a close fourth in the 100m freestyle. Ian Broderick earned a great silver medal in the 100m backstroke where he just edged it by 0.22 secs. from a Fermoy swimmer. His time of 1.38.95 took 3 seconds from his pb.
Relays: Ennis boys 13-14 year olds won the 4 x 50m freestyle relay in 2.22.00. They just failed to do the double in the 4 x 50m medley relay when beaten by 0.04sec. for the gold. The 8-12 year old boys won bronze medals in both the 4 x 50m freestyle relay and 4 x 50m medley relay.
This ends the club’s ‘B’ grade galas for this season and the swimmers will now take some deserved time out to enjoy the rest of the Summer. The swimmers and club in general would like to thank the coaches and assistants for their efforts and devoting so much of their time throughout the swimming season.
